HIA & Biosphere - Birmingham Frequencies - High Intelligence Agency
Two ambient heavyweights joined forces in the late 90s to experiment and discover a shared soundscape. This collaboration resulted in two albums that are now considered classics of the golden era of ambient electronica. Now, the second chapter, Birmingham Frequencies, is being reissued and is available on vinyl for the very first time.
Bobby Bird (aka Higher Intelligence Agency) from Birmingham and Tromsø-born Geir Jenssen (better known by his legendary Biosphere moniker) first collaborated in 1996 on their debut release, Polar Sequences. This deep interpretation of the Norwegian landscape of Jenssen’s hometown Tromsø instantly became an ambient milestone. As a follow-up to this masterpiece, they united again a year later for a live audio collaboration — this time in Bird’s hometown at Birmingham’s cylindrical Rotunda building.
Unsurprisingly, the track titles are deeply rooted in the city, tracing the places where both artists made field recordings to process into their music. Cannon Hill—filled with playing children and the quacking of ducks, geese, and frogs recorded in Birmingham’s popular park—is accompanied by lush guitar loops and subtle, minimalistic electronica. The mysterious atmosphere of a foggy night at Gas Street Basin harbor is built around dissonant, siren-esque bleeps that fade in and out over classic late-90s, IDM-leaning drums.
The gentle lapping of a Narrowboat against the water, a sleepy guitar sample, and metallic percussion continue the sonic city tour in the track of the same name. The venue itself is also embedded in the album: Rotunda, with its hypnotic, soundtrack-esque rhythm group of bass, guitar, and drums, evokes the sensation of walking all 25 floors up in a continuous circle. Not far from Cannon Hill Park, Augusta Road picks up the dark, misty vibe of their previous album. Daddylonglegs sounds precisely like its name suggests—a cellar echoing with fast, flitting spiders—before Midpoint the longest track on the record, concludes the journey through the West Midlands city with a playful, rhythmic, yet patient blend of classic 90s IDM and techno-infused ambient soundscapes.
